What is this?
Local company is looking for a Plant Metallurgist. They are looking for someone who has been out of school for 2-3 years, and wants to work in the Tulsa area. This is a salaried position, with primary work hours being Monday-Friday 8-5pm.

What does my day look like?

  • Performs a variety of duties that include reviewing customer specifications, analyzing products, and assuring control of the production processes compliance with quality system requirements.
  • Responsible for performing metallurgical investigations to eliminate quality defects, make improvements in plant recovery and reduce major losses.
  • Focus on quality and cost control by way of ensuring that raw material and finished good meet specifications of mechanical strength, strength-weight ratio, and magnetic properties.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WI) are followed and that in-process and final tubing produced complies with all customer requirements, specifications and ASTM standards.
  • Following testing and evaluation, the Plant Metallurgist will prepare a written report for all failure analyses.
  • Performs advanced metallographic examinations.
  • Performs failure analyses on internal and external failures
  •  Facilitates material/process related (external) claims.
  • Facilitates Corrective Actions for (external) claims.
  •  Creates and administers Skill Base Pay level classes to employees on Non-Destructive Testing
  • Supervises special projects.
  • Provides support to Tech. Services and OEM development departments.
  • Provides technical support for Weld Mills, Cold Draw, and Finishing
  • Determines lab equipment needs.
  • Maintains metallographic and imaging equipment.
  •  Performs mechanical, chemistry, and heat treatment testing.

What does the perfect candidate look like?

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a focus on Metallurgy or Materials required. Master’s Preferred.
  • Ability to become level 3 ASNT with Eddy Current and Ultra-Sonic Testing.
  • After training, must be able to operate and read measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and tape measures); setup and operate NDT equipment, including Eddy Current and Ultra Sonic equipment; operate tensile and hardness testing equipment.
  • Prior experience or an internship in metals manufacturing and familiarity with ASTM, ISO and QS 9000 standards.
  •  Experience with audit teams to verify conformance of the Management System requirements.
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Office, SAP systems, and SharePoint.
  •  Excellent organization and planning skills with the ability to think ahead, work on own, and the ability to organize and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Highly motivated self-driven individual with a strong desire to succeed and eager to enhance knowledge and skills through on-going education and development.
  •  Must be creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail oriented with a mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work both independently and in a project team environment.
  • Excellent technical writing skills with the proven ability to write technical reports and procedures for internal documentation.

What will the physical requirements be?

  • Must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per day on a regular basis. May require additional hours of work, as required.
  • Requires full range of body motion to include: lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, and squatting.
  • Position requires frequent walking and/or standing on concrete floor while wearing steel-toed shoes. May walk up to two (2) miles per shift while performing essential duties.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • May require unassisted lifting of a variety of objects from various positions, which range in weight from 5 to 50 pounds with an average weight of 34-37 pounds.
  • Utilizes a variety of hand positions such as turning and twisting.
  • Since the manufacturing plant operates around-the-clock, may often work late shifts and may be called at any hour to deal with emergencies. This could mean going to the plant to resolve the problem, regardless of the hour, and staying until the situation is under control.
  • Dealing with team members when working under the pressure of production deadlines or emergency situations can be stressful.
  • When the Plant Metallurgist is assigned to assist a work center, they may, during the majority of the 8-hour work shift, be required to bend and twist slightly forward at the waist to manually roll, push, and pull approximately 50-100 tubes weighing 25- 250 lbs. each onto a processing table.
  • Plant Metallurgist will use a manual micrometer (measuring instrument) to verify Outside Diameter (OD), Inside Diameter (ID) of tubing, and wall thickness dimensions to customer requirements.
  • When using a micrometer, the Plant Metallurgist will use fingers to constantly manipulate the barrel of the micrometer with some wrist motion of twisting and turning. 
  • Plant Metallurgist also performs a visual inspection of each tube for defects.
  • The physical demands of a Plant Metallurgist will increase when required to fill-in, assist, and or train new personnel by performing a production operator?s job.
  • Plant Metallurgist will spend a time on the production floor, office and lab.
  • The office environment is typically temperature controlled and clean, with normal air contaminants, such as dust, typically found in an office environment.
  • The manufacturing environment has regular exposure to loud and prolonged noise and some work may be performed around moving equipment and machines.
  • Regular exposure to hot temperatures of 95º F to 110º F in the summer due to the combination of the actual outside temperature and heat from the processes inside the facility. Employees are also exposed to cold temperatures, which is dependent on the actual outside temperature.
  • While in the manufacturing area, employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to include noise/hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields and steel toed work shoes.
  • The Plant Metallurgist may spend large amounts of time performing testing operations in the laboratory.
